Wine Discount Center, Clybourn Corridor, Barrington, Forest Park and Highland Park, noon–4 [...] Some people get up on Christmas morning and have hot cocoa and stollen and open presents under the tree. Some go to church. Other people get up that morning and have bagels and lox and maybe go to the movies. You don’t have to eat Chinese food on Christmas. The Klezmatics: “Happy Joyous Hanukkah” by Woody Guthrie Experience the heights of contemporary Jewish music at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, when Klezmer superstars The Klezmatics come to Skokie’s North Shore Center for the Performing Arts for a Hanukkah concert sponsored by Kfar Jewish Arts Center and Center East. Is there anyone left cooking Thanksgiving dinner at home? Most restaurants used to close on Thanksgiving, but no more. Heather Moran Tomorrow night presents a conundrum for cabaret fans. I was so sad to see the news that Don Roth’s Blackhawk in Wheeling will close forever after serving dinner on New Year’s Eve. On Monday, owner Ann Roth, Don’s widow, announced the closing: “With my 90th birthday on the horizon and none of my children in a position to assume responsibility for the family [...] During hard times, people seek the warmth of the well-known, the solace of childhood memory. In dining, that means comfort food (perhaps explaining local food media’s recent burger fixation. The stage equivalent — comfort theater, if you will — arises in low-risk revivals and shows that look back at happier days. Marlene Dietrich never visited Skokie in person, but you can see her there soon. |
