A flotilla of deep fryers is going full tilt at local restaurants and bars. It’s Lent, the season of the fish fry, when Roman Catholics, some 2.5 million strong here in the Chicago area, and some other Christians seek out seafood each Friday throughout the 40-day, pre-Easter period of abstinence. Check out these spots for your Friday fish fix. In New Orleans, the Tuesday before Lent, this year Feb. 16, culminates a riotous season known as Mardi Gras. Here in Chicago, some celebrate Louisiana-style, but to a million or so Chicagoans, Fat Tuesday is Paczki Day (say “POONCH-key”). What it is: The national dish of Brazil, feijoada is a flavorful stew of beans, beef and pork, a perfect dish to serve in honor of the Carnival season (Carnaval in Portuguese), which begins in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, Feb. 13, and runs through Fat Tuesday, Feb. 16. These Chicagoland wine shops host weekly free wine tastings where you’re welcome to sip and sample highlighted vintages. Just Grapes, West Loop, 2–4 p.m. Saturdays. Wine Discount Center, Clybourn Corridor, Barrington, Forest Park and Highland Park, noon–4 [...] You don’t have to eat Chinese food on Christmas. It’s National Foie Gras Week! From June 11–16, Chicago Chefs for Choice fete the first anniversary of the return of the unctuous duck liver to Chicago menus with the 2009 Foie Gras Fest. Each restaurant offers a specially-created foie gras dish — or more — for just $10. |
